When visiting a more conservative country such as Jordan, Morocco, or Malaysia, especially as a female traveller, you want to ensure you pack appropriate clothing that respects local customs whilst keeping cool if it’s a hot climate. Even more so as a solo female traveller, you want to avoid causing disrespect, confrontation or unwanted attention to yourself. This guide will help you plan what to wear so you can feel confident and enjoy your time exploring more of the world. These tips will also help if you’re planning a trip to a Church or Temple in Europe or Asia.
- Linen/cotton trousers: lightweight with plenty of coverage a beige pair of cotton trousers will go with majority of your tops/shirts. They’ll also protect your ankles if you’re in a jungle from mosquitoes.
- Silk trousers: perfect to dress up for an evening outfit
- Cotton shirts over vest tops: a long sleeve t shirt could be too hot, and a cotton shirt too sheer so having a shirt over a vest top gives you coverage while keeping cool.
- Scarf: a scarf can be used in different ways from a headscarf, to cover your shoulders or to wear as a skirt to cover your knees
- Maxi skirt: perfect for mooching around a city centre or going out for dinner
- Hat (cap or fedora): when out in the heat be sure to keep your head covered from the sun
- Slide off shoes: if you’re visiting a place of worship such as a temple or mosque you’ll more than likely need to remove your shoes- keep it simple by packing some slide off shoes such as Birkenstocks to easily remove and put back on
- Bikinis/swimming costumes: when visiting Morocco and Jordan it would not have been allowed/appropriate to where a bikini at a public beach. It’s still worth baking a cosy if visiting a private/hotel beach or resort.
