What to pack for a Working Holiday in Australia

Having recently moved to Brisbane for 4 months on a Working Holiday Visa the main things to pack for a working holiday is: not a lot. This guide will detail the necessities and what is worth bringing with you.

Only bring one suitcase/backpack

Some people come to Australia with 2 big suitcases. If you’re going to stay in one apartment the whole time then that’s fine, but most people coming to Australia want to explore different states or hop over to Asia and so you don’t want to be paying for extra luggage on all your flights and buses. Personally I find the more stuff I bring the more stressful it is keeping track of it.

What clothes to take on a working holiday Australia

The temperature in Australia varies as it’s such a massive country. In Queensland, I have mainly summer clothes with a couple of jumpers for chilly days (you know when it gets down to 22 degrees). The clothes I brought are:

  • one tracksuit (handy for the plane)
  • one jumper
  • denim jacket
  • denim shorts
  • cotton trousers
  • maxi skirt
  • bandeau top
  • t shirts
  • vest tops
  • sports bra
  • gym top and shorts
  • 2 bras and 15 knickers (I put a wash on between 1 and 2 weeks)
  • 2 sets of pjs
  • 3 bikinis
  • 1 swimsuit
  • cap (very important)

Part of the reason I brought less clothes with me is I love the clothes here in Australia and knew I wanted to buy more out here and needed room in my case for the journey home.

What toiletries to take to Australia on a working holiday via

Factor 50! Suncream is much cheaper out here in Australia but you still need some for when you first arrive because the sun is strong here. This is also why you need to always wear a cap when you’re spending time out in the sun.

I’d also recommend brining a nice perfume, minimal make up (as it will sweat off), but majority you can buy once you’re here.

What else should I bring?

  • battery pack
  • chargers
  • tablet (to download films for plane journeys)
  • notepad and pen
  • usb twinkly lights (to make wherever you’re staying feel a bit more aesthetically pleasing)
  • any important travel documents (passport obviously) vaccine cards etc
  • medicine (immodium, ibuprofen, antihistamines)
  • microfibre towel
