Ultimate travel guide for Slovenia the hidden gem of Europe

Europe is host to amazing scenery particularly the Italian Dolomites and Swiss Alps. While Italy and Switzerland are pretty expensive, Slovenia still enjoys cheaper prices with mind blowing scenery. Now is the time to visit this almost hidden gem of Europe before it becomes overcrowded with tourists. This ultimate guide includes time of year to travel, things to do and what to eat to make the most of your time in Slovenia.

Ljubljana, Slovenia’s beautiful city

If travelling by plane or bus you will likely stop at the city Ljubljana at some point. This city is beautiful with stunning architecture, castles, churches, parks, coffee shops and restaurants. Literally everything you could want from a European city. Save the following places on your Google Maps:

  • Tromostovje, scenic point with bridges over the water
  • Ljubljana castle
  • Tivoli park
  • Burek Olympia for a cheap pastry snack that’s a favourite with locals

Due to my own time limitations I only spent a morning in this city as I wanted to spend more time in the countryside but I’d imagine it’s well worth staying for 1 night if you have the time.

Bled, a fairytale town and gem of Slovenia

While you can technically visit Bled from the city in a day as it’s only a 1 hour bus away I’d 100% recommend staying in Bled. Get away from the noise of the city and soak in the serene surrounding of Lake Bled. If you’re backpacking there are a few hostels. I stayed in Bus Station Beds which wasn’t social/party but excellent price and location. As always I booked by hostel through Booking.Com. Must do’s while you’re in Bled are:

  • walk around the lake (it takes about an hour/90 minutes)
  • do the 20 minute Mala Osojnica hike to get a view of Lake Bled and the mountains behind (best to go on a clearer day)
  • try Bled creme cake at Zima cafe
  • walk to Vintgar Gorge through the villages which is very scenic (or take the bus/transfer) entry to the Gorge is €10 and you need to buy a ticket online. If it’s been raining the gorge will be roaring and a sight to behold, or if not it will be calm and a stunning turquoise blue even if the sky is cloudy
  • take a dip in designated swim spots around the lake

If you want to explore more

There are some places I didn’t get the chance to visit like Soca River and other national parks. I would like to return in the summer when I can get involved in more water activities and hire a car to explore these areas more. Slovenia is a beautiful country to spend a few days on your backpacking trip or could be a full week or two family holiday there is so much to offer.
