The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands—each offering its own slice of paradise. With so much ground (and sea!) to cover, planning your trip in advance is essential to make the most of your time in this tropical haven.
Where to Go in the Philippines
Cebu
Most international flights land in either Manila or Cebu, making Cebu an ideal starting—or ending—point for your adventure.
Siargao
Prepare to fall under the Siargao Spell. A week here won’t feel like enough as you soak up the surf vibes, hidden gems, and electric nightlife of this laid-back island.
Palawan
If there’s one place to devote most of your time, it’s here. From hidden beaches to epic boat expeditions, Palawan delivers those postcard-perfect views you came for.

What to Do in Cebu
- Where to Stay: If you’re sticking to the city, LYF Hotel offers a comfortable base. For a more scenic escape, head to Moalboal, just a few hours from Cebu airport.
- Swim with Whale Sharks & Witness the Sardine Run: Truly a highlight of my trip—unforgettable experiences both.
- Kawasan Falls Canyoneering: Adrenaline junkies, this one’s for you. Jump, climb, and swim your way through crystal-blue falls.
- Day Trip to Bohol: Either stay a few nights or make it a day trip from Cebu. See the famous Chocolate Hills and meet the adorable Tarsiers (tiny primates with huge eyes!).
What to Do in Siargao
- Where to Stay: Check into Happiness Hostel, perfectly located between Cloud 9 and General Luna.
- Nightlife: Siargao has a rotating party schedule—every night there’s a designated “place to be.” Sunday Funday starts at Happiness Hostel, then everyone heads to Siargao Beach Club by midnight.
- Local Food: Try Kinilaw, a Filipino dish similar to ceviche. Head to CEV for the best in town—it’s so popular you’ll want to arrive before they open or book weeks in advance.
- Surfing & Smoothies: Ride the famous waves at Cloud 9, or enjoy an açaí bowl at Shaka while watching the surfers in action.
- Island Exploration:
- Sugba Lagoon
- Magpupungko Rock Pools
- Mason River Bridge (great for a splash off the diving boards)
- Coconut Valley Viewpoint
- Island Hopping: Visit Guyam Island, Naked Island, and Secret Beach for a day of sun and sand.
What to Do in Palawan, Philippines
My route: Puerto Princesa → Port Barton → El Nido → 3-Day Expedition to Coron
Puerto Princesa
- Stayed at Mojo Hostel
- Firefly River Cruise in the evening
- Day trip to the Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature
Tip: Ask your hostel if your underground river tour can drop you off in Port Barton afterwards—it’s a smooth way to travel between stops.
Port Barton
- Stayed at Coco Rico Hostel (a party hostel with a great restaurant)
- Join their Saturday boat party/island hopping tour
- Take a tuk-tuk to Coconut Beach, where you’ll likely meet some cheeky wild pigs. (Pro tip: keep your Oreos hidden—they will find them.)
El Nido
- Your gateway to the Philippines’ most iconic scenery
- Choose from set boat tours (A, B, C, D). Tours A & C are the most popular (and busiest), while B & D offer a quieter experience.
- I did Tour A—busy but beautiful and still worth it
Buhay Isla 3-Day Expedition (El Nido to Coron)
This was the highlight of my entire trip. For three days, you’ll island-hop with a group of travelers, sleep in beachfront huts, and snorkel over stunning coral reefs. Think: cliff jumping, sunset watching, and lifelong memories made on the sea. Absolute 10/10.
Coron
Personally, Coron was the most underwhelming stop. The day tours felt crowded and the snorkeling didn’t compare to the expedition. That said, it may be worth a visit if it fits your itinerary—and you haven’t just come off the high of a multi-day boat trip.
Final Thoughts on the Philippines
The Philippines is a country that captures your heart and never really lets go. From swimming with whale sharks in Cebu to partying in Siargao and sleeping under the stars in Palawan, every island offers something unique. With a bit of planning and flexibility, your adventure here could just be the trip of a lifetime.
