Making the most of Moreton Island

Moreton Island is the third largest sand island in the world, second being Straddie island its neighbour. The perfect day trip from Brisbane there’s a number of activities to do to make the most of this beautiful adventurous island. Also if you’re a Scooby Doo fan this island was where Spooky Island was filmed for the live action movie!

How to get there

You’ll need to cross via vehicle or passenger ferry. If you’re travelling on your own I recommend a tour. Sunset Safaris include transport to and from Brisbane city. You can also book ferry/lunch/snorkel tickets directly with Tangalooma Resort they have a range of options including a sunset dolphin feeding option!

What to do on Moreton Island?

Snorkel the wrecks! This is the most popular option as the shipwreck attracts lots of beautiful fish. I’d recommend going with a tour who include scuba suit and gloves so you don’t get cut on the sharp shipwreck.

Kayaking around the wrecks is also fun. If you head a bit further out you might also encounter dolphins!

If you like a bit of adrenaline, heading out into the dessert for sand boarding the steep dunes is heaps of fun.

What to bring to Moreton?

If you’ve booked a tour you won’t need to bring extra equipment like a toboggan or snorkel mask.

You’ll need the standard water, suncream, hat, waterproof camera (can’t recommend investing in a GO PRO enough!) and a battery pack as it’s a long day and you want your phone to get home.

Definitely recommend a scuba suit as there were lots of cuts after sitting on this shipwreck!
