Guide to Venice

Make the most of your trip to the beautiful city of Venice

Getting around

From the airport you can get a bus to Piazza Roma and from there a water taxi (Line 2) to nearer your hotel (depending how central you’re staying). We pretty much walked everywhere once we were in the heart of Venice (near Rialto bridge). We went to the ACTV ticket desks to arrange our water taxis and buses to the airport. Also, be aware that there is Passport Control to leave Venice as well as when you arrive so make sure you get to the airport for your departing flight within plenty of time.

Where to eat

We were pleasantly surprised to find reasonably priced restaurants throughout Venice (€9 for pizzas and pasta dishes). Yes, you can be paying €10 for an espresso right in St Marks Square but if you walk a couple of streets around you’ll find somewhere much more reasonably priced. Al Vaporetto near our apartment was delicious and we got free limoncello shots at the end!

Where to have fun

2 minute walk from Rialto bridge is Bacaro Jazz bar. Although this was far from an actual jazz bar we were not disappointed. €10 cocktails with European spirit measures (a.k.a free pour alcohol with a dash of mixer), ABBA and Bon Jovi playing on the screens we had a great time!

What to do

  • Rialto bridge
  • Day/half day trip to Burano and other islands
  • Ponte dell’Accademia
  • Chiesa di San Barnaba (this church was used as the external setting of the Library in an Indian Jones film)
  • St Mark’s Square
