A guide to visiting Adelaide and the surrounding spots in South Australia including where to go and what to eat in this beautiful and laid back state capital city.
Where to stay in Adelaide?
Like most Australian cities, Adelaide has a wide range of accommodation from hostels to hotels. As I was backpacking I stayed at Tequila Sunrise which had an excellent central location and free home cooked dinners.
What to do in and around Adelaide?
Fringe festival
Luckily when I visited in February it was the Adelaide Fringe Festival which is the southern hemisphere’s biggest Fringe festival (in parallel to Edinburgh’s famous Fringe). I got a ticket to the Sleepy Hill Tunnel exhibition which was very cool to see.
Swim with Dolphins
I have done a few dolphin experiences including in New Zealand and Monkey Mia but this was certainly the best one. You take it in turns to hold onto a net at the front of the both and swim along with the dolphins.
Wineries
My one regret is not taking a trip to McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley wineries after enjoying the wine tasting at Yarra Valley in Victoria. South Australia is arguably the best wine in Australia which is already world renowned and would be top of my list when revisiting South Australia.

Kangaroo Island
This was the most expensive day trip I did in my whole time in Australia but with few people getting the opportunity to visit this beautiful island I thought it was worth it. If you have more time, a few days on the island would be perfect. We saw seals, koalas, kangaroos and the aptly named Remarkable Rocks.
Bordertown
Arriving from the Grampians to Adelaide, we stopped in Bordertown which had charming shops, cafes and a group of white kangaroos which was very cool to see.
Where to eat?
I was blown away with the options particularly for brunch. My two favourites were:
Peter Rabbit
This Peter Rabbit themed restaurant offers great açai bowls, eggs on toast and matcha lattes.
Part Time Lover
This gorgeous restaurant I could go back for breakfast lunch and dinner. My breakfast of sourdough, honey, feta and prosciutto was the highlight of my trip.
