Western Australia is known for its beautiful beaches. While the likes of Exmouth and Esperance are often voted best in Australia, Perth city (where 90% of Western Australians live) has some pretty good contenders.
Little Salmon Bay
This was my favourite beach in Rottnest Island. The water was so clear I could open my eyes underwater with no goggles. Being a bay, it was sheltered from the elements as September is still quite chilly in Perth.
The Basin
Close to the main settlement in Rottnest Island this beach has Little Rock pools to snorkel around without having any big waves knocking you back. You’re close to the shops (and the quokkas) and have a lighthouse view too.
Yanchep Lagoon
A 40 minute drive from Perth CBD this lagoon has very pretty panoramic views and again is sheltered from the big surfing waves meaning you can have a proper swim or even snorkel.
Cottesloe
In one of the most up market suburbs of Perth Cottesloe is great for a swim especially after work where you can also watch the sunset with plenty of grassy areas if you want to enjoy some fish and chips without sand making your chips a bit gritty.
Trigg
Trigg beach has a few different areas, some sections are great for surfing whereas the little bay sheltered by rocks by Clarko Reserve is great for a swim or snorkel. Lots of little fishies means you also see people fishing off the big rocks there.
Mullaloo
Living in the northern suburbs, I might be biased saying Mullaloo is the best beach in Perth. Beautiful blue water, bright white sand I think this is the closest to a South West Beach that Perth has to offer. Just watch out for Trevor the Tiger Shark a frequent visitor the past few years but Mullaloo does have a shark alarm if he is spotted.
Quinns Beach
Another gem in the north, Quinns Beach has a few areas including a dog beach and a netted area. I visited on an overcast day in spring, enjoying an açai bowl from Luna n Soul before a lovely coastal walk.
Coogee
Just south of Fremantle, Coogee Beach is home to the Omeo Ship Wreck an amazing spot for a snorkel that is so close to the shore, very accessible. There is also a netted area so you can have a swim feeling more confident.
