The Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia is one of the world’s most scenic drives and a highlight on many visitors’ trips to Australia. While spending over a year in Australia this was actually one of the last places I visited and it was certainly worth the wait. This guide explains how to visit the Great Ocean Road as well as the remarkable Grampians on your visit Down Under.
Ways to visit the Great Ocean Road
You can drive the route yourself over the course of a day or two as there is so much to see. If you are returning back to Melbourne (where most people depart from) ensure you give enough time to get back to the city.
Melbourne to Adelaide via Great Ocean Road and Grampians
I chose Autopia’s 2 Day 1 Night trip that starts in Melbourne and ends in Adelaide rather than returning back to Melbourne and flying to Adelaide to continue my travels. This was a really run way to see more of the country and totally recommend.
Where to stop along the Great Ocean Road
There are heaps of places to stop along the Great Ocean Road. As I was on a shorter tour where we had to get to the Grampians for that evening’s accommodation these were my highlights:
Apollo Bay– have a quick dip at the beach, try a Tassie scallop pie from Apollo Bay cafe and Dooley’s Vegemite ice cream.
12 Apostles– the iconic view of the formations out from the shoreline
Loch Ard Gorge– another iconic view from the shoreline
Melba Gully– tall tries whispering in the wind. Along the road we also spotted Koalas.

Staying in the Grampians
On the tour I was on we spent the first night at Halls Gap. As we drove through sunset there were many kangaroos hopping along which was very scenic. After having a shower and unpacking my bags I went outside to take a look at the stars which was truly breathtaking.
Things to see in the Grampians
Boroka Look Out– beautiful view first thing in the morning
Reeds Look Out- another scenic view, almost a blue tint like the Blue Mountains in Sydney
MacKenzie Falls– beautiful waterfall you can walk down to
