My first ever solo flight happened to be London to Sydney- one of the longest journeys possible with a flight time of 22.5 hours! If you’re headed on a long haul flight soon these tips should help make it more comfortable.
Drink lots of water
Bring your own bottle and ask the air hostess/steward if it can be filled up. Usually there will be a self serve drinks and snack station on long haul flights (behind the curtains) so you can help yourself. This means you’ll stay hydrated which will help fight jet lag when you land.
Get moving
So drinking lots of water will help with this- get up frequently to use the loo or just stretch your legs. I have a rule to get up at least once for each movie I watch.
Book an aisle seat
To be up and moving without disturbing those next to you your best booking an aisle seat. This also means you can stretch your leg to the side a bit more and feel less cramped.
Choose a seat near the wings
Turbulence isn’t dangerous and even if you’re not scared it can be distracting. Having a seat near the wings means you won’t feel it as much so won’t disturb your sleep.
Sleep
And on that note get plenty of sleep! Ideally sleep when it’s night time for your destination but in general just sleep as much as you can.
Flight socks
Ever taken your shoes off on a long flight and struggled to get them back on as your feet have swelled? Well flight socks prevent that, keep your tootsies warm in a chilly cabin and are thick so you feel more comfy walking to the toilets in them.
Bring nice smelling hand cream
A small hand cream with your favourite scent (or tropical fruits if you’re going somewhere sunny that’ll get you excited for your holiday) is a little boost and keeps your skin moisturised. I even use a little on my face to keep it hydrated. Plus when you start to feel a little smelly and gross after the 12th hour it helps mask it.
