A day in Salzburg, Austria

On a recent trip to Munich, we decided to visit Salzburg for the day as our flight home wasn’t until 9pm. This article is the perfect guide if you’re visiting Salzburg for a few hours or a day.

If you’re staying in Munich, then it’s really easy to get to Salzburg by train. In a couple of hours you can turn your city break into multi- country trip! Although we weren’t checked on the train out, our passports were checked by Border Force on the train back so don’t forget your passport!

You can pre-book your train tickets on Trainline which I would recommend to save yourself from faffing at the train station, trying to navigate a ticket machine in other language.

When you arrive in Salzburg you walk down the road towards Mirabell Gardens. It’s free to walk around these gardens, although we visited in late autumn it was still very pretty but I’d imagine even better in spring.

Round the corner you’ll find Mozart’s birthplace. If you have more time than we did, you can visit the museum that’s there as well.

From there you can walk to Love Locks Bridge. The bridge itself is nice to see with all the padlocks but the main thing is the view of the castle. After walking over this bridge you can make your way to the Old Town.

This is a good point to pop into a cafe house for a hot chocolate and sweet cake. Salzburg is known for their Sachertorte but you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the options available.

If you visit in late November to early January you’ll get to visit the Christmas market in the old town. There’s still a few different things to see if that’s not available. There’s the catacombs, which you walk up and get a view of the old town and the watermill is pretty cool. You’ll need to pay a €2 entry fee in cash.

If I went back again I would pay the €16 for the funicular to the Fortress Hohensalzburg as it does have good reviews.

For a hearty lunch before your train back to Munich, Zwettler’s Wirtshaus was a great find. Near the Mozart statue and Salzburg cathedral you can get schnitzel, goulash and other delicious dishes.
